How to Choose Progressive Reading Glasses: A Complete Guide

How to Choose Progressive Reading Glasses: A Complete Guide

If you've been squinting at your phone, holding menus at arm's length, or struggling to shift focus between your laptop and a book, progressive reading glasses might be exactly what you need. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right pair? This guide walks you through everything you need to know — from understanding how progressive lenses work to finding the perfect fit for your face and lifestyle.

What Are Progressive Reading Glasses?

Progressive reading glasses — sometimes called multifocal readers — feature lenses with a seamless gradient of magnification. Unlike traditional bifocals, which have a visible line dividing two distinct zones, progressives offer a smooth transition from your near-vision distance at the top, through an intermediate zone in the middle for computer work, to your reading strength at the bottom.

The result? Natural, comfortable vision at every distance — whether you're checking your phone, reading a book, or glancing across the table— without the jarring "image jump" of bifocals.

Step 1: Know Your Reading Strength (Add Power)

The first step in choosing progressive reading glasses is knowing your reading add power — the magnification level you need for close-up tasks. Add powers typically range from +1.00 to +3.00 in 0.50 increments.

If you've never been tested, a quick self-test using this chart at home can give you a starting point.

Pro tip: If you already wear single-vision readers, your current strength is a good baseline for the reading zone of your progressives.

Step 2: Choose the Right Frame Size for Your Face

Frame fit is critical with progressive lenses — more so than with single-vision readers. The lens needs enough vertical height to accommodate all three vision zones. Here's how to match frame size to your face:

Narrow Frames

If you have a narrower face or a smaller head circumference, a narrow frame will sit properly without sliding or pinching. Frames that are too wide will shift out of alignment, throwing off the optical centers of the lenses.

Medium Frames

Medium frames are the most versatile and suit the widest range of face shapes. They work well for oval, heart-shaped, and slightly square faces. Our medium-width progressive readers are designed to balance coverage with a refined, modern look.

Wide Frames

If you have a broader face or a wider pupillary distance (PD), wide frames ensure the optical centers of the lenses align correctly with your pupils — which is essential for clear, distortion-free vision in progressives.

How to measure: We have links to tools to help you measure your PD here.

Step 4: Pick a Frame Material That Fits Your Lifestyle

Frame material affects durability, weight, and comfort — all of which matter when you're wearing glasses for extended periods.

  • Acetate frames are lightweight, hypoallergenic, and available in rich colors and patterns (including tortoise shell). They're a premium choice for all-day comfort and a polished aesthetic.
  • Metal frames are durable, affordable, and easy to adjust and will have nose-pads.

Step 5: Understand the Adaptation Period

Sightline lenses are a unique design.  More most other progressive the seller will tell you you need a period of time to adapt to the lenses.  Not Sightline.  Our motto is:  "If you have to adapt, send them back."  Still give it a little time and try these tips:

  • Move your head (not just your eyes) to look at objects in different zones.
  • Wear your progressives consistently — the more you wear them, the faster you'll adapt.
  • Avoid switching back and forth between progressives and single-vision readers during the adaptation period.

If distortion or discomfort persists, we invite you to return the readers for a full refund.  We will even provide a prepaid return label upon request.
